Meet Scott

I am a professional Landscape Architect with experience that includes single/multi-family residential, commercial, streetscape and park development. For over 12 years, I have operated my own landscape architecture firm Grounded By Design, LLC in Wheat Ridge. I have been serving on the City of Wheat Ridge Planning Commission since November 2010 and was elected chair for 3 of those years by my fellow commissioners. I served on the board of Wheat Ridge 2020 (now Localworks) as well as the Wheat Ridge Building Code Advisory Board and attended DRCOG's Citizens Academy.

Since 2005, I have made my home in Wheat Ridge. I was fortunate to be able to walk my kids to Wilmore Davis past the mature trees in my neighborhood, but also able to walk to a bus on 38th or take the G Line to see a Rockies game downtown.  You can often see me out for a walk with my family around our neighborhood and along our local trails at Crown Hill Lake and the Clear Creek trail.  I especially enjoy bike rides along the Clear Creek trail after shuttling my two teenagers between Everitt Middle and Wheat Ridge High Schools.

I am running for City Council District 2 to continue my mission to contribute civically to Wheat Ridge by listening to the concerns and suggestions of our community.  I want to listen and discover what is happening in everyone's backyard in order to help preserve the character of the community. This will require building consensus with city staff, city council and the community to move forward through smart growth and development that makes our community inclusive and resilient.

Issues

Continue to build equitable and resilient communities

I am proud that Wheat Ridge was recently awarded the prestigious designation as an All-America City in June 2021. This award is given to cities who demonstrate strong civic capital characteristics including equity and resilience.  As a city council member, I will work to preserve the "history, sustainability, inclusion and resiliency" that makes Wheat Ridge an All-America City. Similar to the program "Let's Talk Resident Engagement Program" implemented in 2005 by the Neigborhood Revitalization Strategy. As a city council member for District 2, I will urge adaption through consensus and leadership to create a stronger community.

Champion smart development and growth

As SCL Health is leaving the existing hospital campus on 38th to build a new hospital at Clear Creek Crossing, the challenge is to determine how to utilize the large property and existing buildings once vacated. City staff have been instrumental in working with the current property owners that will create a master plan that builds consensus by incorporating input from the citizens, planning commission and city council. The SCL Hospital campus renovation could be adding residential, retail, civic, and office spaces and may have an impact on traffic. A walkable city is a healthy city. Walkable communities are places where goods, services, parks and trails are nearby and the dependence on cars are balanced by the ability to walk or take public transportation.  Increasing the walkability of a city will lead to healthier and happier communities.  A challenge that faces Wheat Ridge currently is how do we link communities that are separated by water ditches and missing sidewalks to schools and shopping areas.  Sidewalks keep kids and disabled commuters elevated and protected from traffic. Investigating the use of traffic calming devices in problem areas through the citizen initiated City process.
